Flood inundation mapping

Flood is one of the biggest natural phenomena which not only affects and threatens human’s life, properties but also the services and activities of industries and communities. Therefore the Flood inundation mapping (FIM) is required to understand the effects of flooding in a particular area and on important structures such as roadways, buildings and industries. Flood damages can be reduced by nonstructural measures such as flood risk mapping. Structural measures require constructions of large-scale facilities, they result in budget burdens and environmental problems 1.

We at satyukt analyze the flood impact using the satellite and extreme rainfall events, which in turn can help to identify the flood risk zones within the project area. The historical flood events for the past 30 years are identified with the help of multiple satellite data. Hydrological models can be used to determine the runoff for the various extreme rainfall events such as 10, 25, 50, 100, 500 year return periods. Then with the help of hydraulic simulation the inundated area inside the project areas are identified. One such spatial map over a region in Gujarat is shown in figure 1.
