Monitoring crop residue burning
The contribution of agriculture in the economic growth of any country can’t be denied. With the increase in population, the demand for food is also increasing in developed as well as in developing countries. So, to meet the demands there is an increase in production of the crop as well as agricultural waste, resulting in crop residue burning 1. Crop residue burning not only causes major environmental problems but also can cause health issues in human beings. It also degrades the quality of soil that reduces the productivity of crops in the long run 2.
In Sri Lanka the crop residue burning intensifies mainly in June, July and reaches the maximum in August as it is the harvesting period 3. The above image shows the active fire over entire Sri Lanka in August 2018. The number of fires detected is more during this period due to the crop residue burning. The satellite data can be used to detect and monitor these activities.
Satyukt Analytics Pvt Ltd is capable of monitoring active fire with the help of multi-temporal satellite imagery so that new techniques can be adopted to curb this kind of problem.
