Risk reduction in industrial area due to floods
Flood damage is defined as all the varieties of harm provoked by flooding. It includes all detrimental effects on people, their health, and properties; on public and private infrastructure. In 2006, Surat city was affected by floods which resulted in losses to the textile industries were very high. Mean loss and damage for each unit was approximately INR1.51 million where, INR 0.98 million was towards direct losses, INR 1 million was towards indirect losses Flood-induced economic loss and damage to the textile industry in Surat City, India 1.
Nowadays at a small scale level, losses to the private infrastructure due to floods is also one of the major problems.
There are many ways to reduce losses due to floods like structural measures, non structural measures. Structural measures are any physical construction to reduce or avoid possible impacts of hazards, or the application of engineering techniques or technology to reduce the losses and resilience in structures or systems. Non-structural measures are measures not involving physical construction which use knowledge, practice or agreement to reduce disaster risks and impacts. Before taking any type of mitigation measure it is necessary to do the detailed analysis of the area of interest to avoid flooding and reduce the cost of the mitigation measure by selecting proper methodology 2.
The methodology for the integration of flood hazard in risk-reduction process for industrial plants, proposed by INERIS, follows a sequence in 3 steps, as detailed below:
Step 1: Characterization of flood hazard,
Step 2: Preliminary risk analysis,
Step 3: Detailed risk analysis.
Advanced models are capable of modeling more detailed physical phenomena to do the detailed analysis even in a small scale area compared to conventional analysis. We at satyukt analyze the flood impact on areas of interest by numerical modeling using satellite data and extreme rainfall events, which in turn can help to identify the flood risk zones within the project area to reduce the losses due to floods in advance.
