River Cauveri: Time to shore it up with better water quality data

Cauvery, the one known for its bitter water dispute between the riparian states extends over states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and the Union territory of Puducherry1. The river is facing pollution right from where it originates — the Kodagu district, where it is also honored as the Ganga of the South 2. The issue that dates back to the pre-independence times still stands unresolved. The states have spent decades battling out a legal dispute on sharing the water, but lost in the noise is the prevailing pollution and mismanagement of the water resources on both sides.

Considering the high degree of pollution, there is a need for monitoring the water quality. In-situ monitoring of these parameters by collecting water samples from different sites would be time taking and tedious. The samples collected manually may not represent the spatial variation of parameters and hence would not be able to accurately identify the causes of pollution.

Satyukt analytics Pvt Ltd is capable of mapping different water quality parameters using multi-satellite data . The data and algorithms developed by us can detect chlorophyll a (Chl a), watercolor, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and much more.
