VATI Updates: Automatic detection of soil roughness profile from Needle Profilometer
Backscatter coefficient depends on Vegetation, Soil roughness and soil moisture of the place. In order to determine any of these factors, knowledge about the variation of the other factors is important. Needle Profilometer is an instrument commonly used to determine the roughness of soil profile. Conventionally the profile is marked at the site and then measurements are made in Lab which is tedious and time-consuming. To make this process easy, Satyukt Analytics Pvt Ltd has developed an innovative algorithm for automatic detection of the roughness profile of soil.
The image of Needle profilometer taken at the site with can be uploaded to VATI and the user will be provided with correlation length, hrms value and roughness profile of the soil. VATI is an innovative effort made by the company to make hydrological data and tools understandable and easily accessible to the general public and academicians.
Following are the conditions to be followed while taking the photo, for easy and efficient detection.
- The image should be taken in proper lighting and should be of good resolution.
- Ensure that there is no shadow on the needle pointers.
- The tip of the pointers should be properly wrapped by the red tape and the tape should be of sufficient thickness for identification.
- If possible, the datum from which the measurements should be made be painted in blue for easy detection. Else bottom of the image would be taken as the datum.
- Make sure that the photograph doesn’t have any background objects in red or blue colours.
