Weather paradox: Rain deficient Karnataka reels under flood

Heavy downpour in the recent days have adversely affected many places of India. Reportedly, IMD (Indian Meteorological Department) declared many districts of Karnataka as rainfall deficit. Contradicting this, some parts of the districts which the authorities declared as rainfall deficit, have been experiencing flood-like situation due to the incessant rains. While the total rainfall received is within the normal range, some places experience heavy rainfall while others experienced rainfall deficit. 1. The rainfall pattern this year is puzzling the authorities as even nearby places receive a different amount of rainfall. Rainfall data obtained from rain gauge stations lack coverage, robustness and reliability hence this data alone may not be adequate to address this problem.
Soil moisture increases with an increase in precipitation and hence monitoring and analyzing the same can be beneficial in identifying the rainfall pattern. Satyukt Analytics Pvt Ltd, expertise in microwave remote sensing is capable of producing soil moisture data at fine scale under all weather conditions. The figure shows soil moisture data prepared using an innovative algorithm developed by the company.

Other Applications of soil moisture are,

  • Optimal irrigation in farms
  • Improved flood risk estimation
  • Monitor agricultural drought in near real time
  • Likely crop Yield
  • Irrigation Management
  • Improved weather forecast:
  • Analyze the impact of an irrigation project
  • Estimation of actual evapotranspiration taking place
  • Estimation of area getting degraded
