Will floods be the new “normal” for India?

Incessant rains have wreaked havoc in western parts of the country killing several people and displacing lakhs. Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat are the most affected states. According to a study in IIT Gandhinagar, due to the combined effects of increased carbon emission and climate change, the flood will be the new “normal” for India1. It states that floods have increased over the past decades and the situation is likely to worsen further owing to the climate change.

The rainfall pattern this year is puzzling the authorities as even nearby places receive a different amount of rainfall. Rainfall data obtained from rain gauge stations lack coverage, robustness and reliability hence this data alone may not be adequate to address this problem. Soil moisture increases with an increase in precipitation and hence monitoring and analyzing the same can be beneficial in identifying the rainfall pattern. Satyukt Analytics Pvt Ltd, expertise in microwave remote sensing is capable of producing soil moisture data at fine-scale under all weather conditions.
