As Floods and droughts becomes a never ending story: “4 water” concept is the need of the hour

Water apart from being an intrinsic hydrologic component also plays a crucial role in supporting socioeconomic growth and food security. Conserving and proper monitoring of these resources hence is a necessity. Extreme weather events such as droughts and floods have now become the new “normal”1thing. Poor water management stands as one of the main reasons for these extreme weather events. This issue can be resolved to a great extent by integral monitoring of the components of the hydrologic cycle.
4 water concept introduced by Hanumantha Rao, emphasizes on the monitoring of 4 components of hydrologic cycle viz., Precipitation, soil moisture till water table, surface water and groundwater, contradicting the existing practice of monitoring components of the hydrologic cycle in parts.
The concept was successfully implemented in Rajasthan and many parts of India and is yielding good results. This low-cost technology is capable of recharging groundwater by four times and provides thrice the benefit than conventional models2.
Efforts should be made to make this concept implemented nationally. Satyukt analytics Pvt Ltd, a company expert in agricultural and water resources applications is capable of monitoring all the components of the hydrologic cycle in near real-time and can help in effectively implementing this concept.
