Soil Moisture

Soil Moisture in Brazil

An often under-looked, but agronomically significant entity is soil moisture and how far it affects the crop growth, livestock and the country,  it is one of the important components for the growth of the Crop. Knowledge of spatio-temporal variation of soil moisture is of utmost importance as it helps in understanding the health of crops and can thereby help in crop yield predictions.  Since a lion’s share of Brazil, depends upon the hence it is indispensable to have a keen eye on soil moisture. Satyukt Analytics Private Limited uses a very helpful a tool to keep a check on soil moisture in near real-time using Merging Active and Passive microwave Soil Moisture algorithm (MAPSM) (Tomer et al., 2016)2 employing satellite sensed data which helps track the soil conditions throughout the year.

The image depicts the  discursions in soil moisture  for a small area called Talhao in Brazil showing soil moisture. The map is prepared by merging microwave and optical satellite data using the algorithm MAPSM  developed by us. The soil moisture maps are available on a daily basis at a High Spatial and temporal resolution under all-weather conditions.

The developed near-real-time soil moisture is helpful for:

  • Irrigation water management.
  • Optimal allocation of the electricity for groundwater irrigation.
  • Early warning of agricultural drought. Vegetation indices(e.g. NDVI) captures the drought once it has impacted the crops.
