Crop loss due to Flood

In the Indian economy, the Agriculture sector plays a primary role where nearly 70% of the rural families depend on agriculture. Agriculture is one of the major contributing sectors of the Indian economy as it contributes about 17% to the total GDP.

When natural disasters such as drought, flood, earthquake, wildfires, disease, and infestation occur they directly make an impact on Agriculture. If agriculture is affected then not just farmers indirectly all sectors will be affected gradually. As a result,  agricultural stakeholders such as farmers, agri-input, agri-output, and more are facing various challenges due to many uncertainties in the climate.

In this blog, we are concentrating only on the flood. A flood can be a cause of either excessive rain, an after-effect of cyclones, or a dam breach. But all bring similar damage. These floods bring devastation in the form of loss of human and livestock life, damage to property and cropland leading to a huge economic loss for the past few decades. Flooding can also erode topsoil from agri-land, resulting in immutable habitat damage resulting in food chain crises.

Here at Satyukt, we have developed a unique platform through which we offer early warnings such as weather forecast, soil moisture, and irrigation advisory to farmers before the floods occurred. After a flood, it is very important to get information on flooded crop areas and the extension of crop loss for certain agencies. This information will be helpful in making disaster-related decisions like claim settlement. Currently, these agencies depend on field surveys to get information on crop loss to settle farmers’ claims. But these surveys usually are inaccurate, involve tedious manual effort, are expensive and time-consuming. Also, flooding area information is useful to many organizations such as government and research institutes, dam management, etc. So, we are proving all these services which are accurate, cost-effective and efficient leading to more user and pocket friendly.
